Question by Jake, Staten Island NY POP mail, usually referring to POP3, is an acronym for Post Office Protocol version 3 or POP3. In technical terms this is defined as "an application-layer Internet standard protocol, to retrieve e-mail from a remote server over a TCP/IP connection. Nearly all subscribers to individual Internet service provider e-mail accounts access their e-mail with client software that uses POP3." (Source: Wikipedia) In English this translates into "the way in which your computer downloads email from your provider's server over the internet". That is it, really! When you dig into the technical details it is truly a modern marvel, but for most of us, this is all we need to know. "Don't be afraid of technology, it will make your life easier" |
