How can I create a vanity email address?

Question by Melissa, Paramus NJ

Today, when someone buys internet service from a provider, they are usually equipped with one or many email addresses. These email addresses usually have a common "domain.com" based on which internet service provider you use. I use Verizon FIOS and my Verizon email address ends with "@verizon.net". So a vanity email replaces the "@domain.com" with something appealing to you.

Sounds great and easy but there are a few catches.

As with most things in life there are fees involved. Not unlike hosting your own website, you need to "buy" the domain name. You are not really buying the name as much as you are leasing it for a given period of time, usually 3-10 years. Now you will need to enroll in an email hosting plan. These can be as cheap as $15/year for one email account that you access only via the internet with limited features (spam filters, antivirus) or as much as $40/month for a corporate level email outsourcing.

The hardest part is that you need to find a domain name that is not currently used. Current estimates are that every one word domain name is taken and that most 2 word domain names are taken. So if you think you will be able to get " This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it " think again.

So whats the answer? If you are looking for a personal set of email addresses, your best bet is one of the low cost email hoster plans at a reputable service provider. You can setup a family of 5 with both web mail and POP mail (MS Outlook, Mac Mail) access for about $99 per year.

If you are a business and would like to have a branded email address for your customers to use and to have on your business cards, I suggest skipping the email hosting and moving right into website hosting. While you could spend $99 per year for just email, for about $330/year you could also have a website hosted. Today every business should have a website just like every business should have a phone number. So for a little more annual investment you can have virtually all the email addresses you want plus the best marketing tool in the business, a website.
